I. The Lifespans of Hamsters Vary Greatly Among Different Breeds
There are quite a number of hamster breeds, but these are the common ones, and their lifespans also differ:

Dwarf Campbells Russian Hamsters and Dwarf Winter White Russian Hamsters: These are the most common breeds kept as pets at home. Generally, they can live for 2 to 3 years. For example, the well-known "Purple Dwarf Hamster" and "Pudding Hamster" can easily live up to 2 years if properly cared for.
Roborovski Hamsters (Robo Hamsters and Female Robo Hamsters): They are the smallest in size and have a slightly shorter lifespan, approximately 1.5 to 2.5 years. Since they are extremely active and prone to stress, more attention should be paid when raising them.
Syrian Hamsters (Bear Hamsters): They are the largest in size and have the longest lifespan, able to live for 3 to 4 years. For instance, the "Golden Syrian Hamster" belongs to the Syrian hamster breed. With good care, it can even accompany you for an even longer time.
In simple summary: The lifespan of most pet hamsters at home is between 2 and 3 years, which is indeed much shorter compared to that of cats and dogs. Therefore, we should cherish the time we spend with them even more.
II. These 5 Factors Determine How Long a Hamster Can Live
1. Is the Diet Healthy?
Feeding cheap "three-no" (no production date, no quality guarantee, no manufacturer) hamster food all the time, or giving snacks every day, can make hamsters prone to getting sick. The correct way is to choose the main hamster food from a regular brand. Occasionally, you can give some vegetables (such as cucumbers and carrots) and nuts as snacks, but don't overdo it.
2. Is the Living Environment Good?
If the cage is too small and the bedding is not clean, hamsters may suffer from skin diseases and respiratory diseases. At least prepare a cage that is 47 cm (47-based) or longer. Choose dust-free wood shavings or paper bedding as the bedding material, and clean it 1 to 2 times a week.
3. Is There Stress?
Hamsters are timid. If they are constantly disturbed and the environment is noisy, it is likely to shorten their lifespan. Don't touch them too often or knock on the cage. Give them a quiet corner and place a small shelter for them to hide in.
4. Is Illness Treated Promptly?
Although a cold or diarrhea in hamsters may seem like minor issues, if left untreated for too long, it can be fatal. If you notice that your hamster is less active and its fur is messy, take it to a veterinarian who specializes in exotic pets immediately. Don't give it medicine randomly on your own.
5. Is the Genetic Makeup Good?
Some hamsters are naturally weak in constitution, such as those from inbreeding, and their lifespan may be shorter. When buying a hamster, try to choose a regular pet store and don't be tempted to buy a "week-old hamster" just to save money.
